Is it possible not to write about this miracle of the automotive industry. A year passes, the second and third exploitation, which the wife already reminds, and whether to write about him on the drome ... After all, “as our native and powerful, he combines the splendor of Spanish, the liveliness of French, the strength of German” and, of course, the reliability and sincerity of Japanese , simplicity, richness and pleasure of ownership ... It is a pity that these are not produced in our homeland. Following the classic, I compare different nationalities for a reason, but because no one (regardless of preferences, sometimes quite justified), for example, lovers of German cars, even they can’t say anything bad about this car ... I’m not talking about the second and third generation Rav 4 (although I consider the Rav 4-2 a prediction and the embodiment of a new SUV format, the image of which you constantly see on the streets now many years after the start of their production), I can support the opinion of their owners that, despite a number of new bells and whistles, they drive accurately just as good as previous models...))

So, we are talking about the representative of the first generation Rav 4 (1998, after a complete restyling: complete, because you often meet some intermediate configurations - you won’t understand whether they are unfinished or manually converted models). And about the orthodox American with all its advantages and disadvantages. We got it in post-crisis 2010 in a 20-degree January frost. I never bought cars in the car market, but that time I got there after the advice of a friend with whom we had previously looked at the Kia Sportage 2001 ad and who once owned the same 1999 American Rav 4. Then, in the middle of the zero years, Rav 4-I was the personification of a real and affordable jeep for the real middle class. It is now, against the backdrop of stylish crossovers, he looks like a simple frog, but such is his fate, not an easy one, but, I'm sure, a very long one.

This is how he expected a new owner at the end of a long series of "budget" tricks and ghets, unadorned and even somewhat submissive. This is after two “licked” ravchiks from dealers of about the same years were examined at the entrance, in which even the protection over the wheels was freshly painted black ... At the sight of this, a friend “softly” noted what junk and garbage it was. An advantageous advantage compared to repurchased cars was the relatively low declared cost (310 thousand rubles). Critical features for our growing family were also the presence of air conditioning and automatic transmission. After the second round of the market, the legs themselves led to the “old man”, who had all this. Moreover, the wife got through on an inconspicuous ad without photos, after which it turned out that the owner was waiting for us in the same market. Well, there weren't any options.

A detailed inspection of the car and a long meticulous (while friends drove for an hour on a nearby kart) "interrogation" of the owner showed that the car was delivered from America in 2004, after which it was operated in Moscow by a woman for three years. In 2007, the current owners bought it in Moscow (in my opinion, this fact indicates at least that the ravchik was good enough to take risks and take it from a foreign city). As stated, after buying the car, it went through a full MOT for 1000 bucks and was used for another three years in Nizhny by the wife of the formal owner. I was personally attracted by the logical assumption that women could hardly wear out the power units of a car. But upon closer inspection, it turned out that they still contributed to minor “cosmetic” damage to the body, such as a dent in the bumper and a half-broken turn signal / clearance, as well as a partially repainted rear door and a soldered left “fang”. In my opinion, a certain excessive whistle was clearly heard from under the hood, although no one noticed it (at least they pretended to). Considering that no one has serviced the car for the last three years (except for changing the engine oil, replacing a certain sensor and replacing a windshield that cracked back in Moscow), there could be plenty of reasons for different noises. The engine compartment was distinguished by completely natural pollution, but it was clear that this was not oil or other liquids, but simple dry dirt. Attention was drawn to the burnt low beam lamp and turn signals of different colors. All this together, as well as the unsuccessfully restrained desire of the seller to sell the car (quite explained by the expiration of insurance, technical inspection and transit numbers over the New Year holidays, as it turned out the next day) made it possible to drop the price to 295 thousand rubles. After completing all the procedures associated with the purchase, the car was registered in a couple of days without any problems.

Before buying, the car was checked by the VIN code in the carfax database just for existence, since it was a pity to buy a full report for 30-40 dollars. A year or two later, a stolen report was obtained on the Internet for about 150 rubles, and it turned out that the car began its career in Massachusetts, then was re-registered in the state of New York, and left Pennsylvania for an auction in Russia. At the same time, the odometer at an auction in 2004 showed 90,000 miles. It should be noted here that the tag for replacing the timing belt in 2006 indicated a mileage of ~ 65,000 miles. Simple estimates lead to the conclusion that there was approximately 45,000 miles of twisting. As a result, the actual mileage when buying in 2010 was more than 240,000 miles instead of the apparent 170,000 km.

On the same evening after the purchase, the first long trip turned into a slight disappointment about the check engine light, which, after resetting the battery terminal, did not light up for about a week. Of course, this is a barbaric and rude approach, therefore, immediately, at the prompt of a friend, a slightly more civilized, but only slightly less inconvenient way to reset engine control system errors was mastered - a recess for a short time of the EFI (electronic fuel injection) fuse in the main fuse box under hood. When the check lit up again and again, it was not at all idle curiosity that forced us to turn to specialists for engine diagnostics. It turned out that the cause was error 0401 of the EGR system (exhaust gas recirculation - exhaust gas recirculation system) with a long official justification, the meaning of which is approximately either the wrong exhaust gas temperature, or a long drive at the same speed (50 miles - 80 km per hour). The real reason, apparently, lies in the rapid clogging of the pipes through which the exhaust gases are fed back to the engine and afterburned, thereby reducing the harmfulness of the exhaust. The result is especially noticeable when the engine is running cold, when only smell and condensate come out of the pipe. After a short explanation by the diagnostician, it became clear that no one cleans any pipes, and replacing the EGR valve, which the previous owner did (this was noticeable by the external cleanliness of the valve against the background of a dirty engine compartment), does not solve the problem.

It should be noted that we are talking about one of the most active topics of discussion for ravovods (probably, with the exception of Japanese owners for Japan itself, on which there is no EGR system at all): usually the EGR valve is simply “jammed”, but this solution to the problem is good for pre-style models, and for real Californians with their high environmental requirements, as I realized after a while, it's easier not to think about this problem and just learn how to drive so that the check does not light up. All that is needed for this is not to let the car drive for a long time at one speed (especially “coasting”) at a speed of less than 80-100 km per hour. You just need to get used to regularly "play" with the gas pedal. My personal record is six months of driving without error. Of course, as soon as the wife gets behind the wheel, the error lights up after the first 200 meters. A good name for error 0401 is “wife error” ... Although, over the past six months, we have forgotten about the EGR error. As it turned out later, the whole thing is in the light bulb that has ceased to function))) But this is no longer a problem ...

I note that for an American with a year of manufacture above 1997, you can safely use a Bluetooth adapter (for example, ELM327 Bluetooth OBD-II Wireless Transceiver Dongle) to connect to the engine management system via a standard OBD-2 connector installed and easily accessible under the dashboard. Even a simple Torque program for Android provides the ability to control engine parameters and, most importantly, the ability to recognize and painlessly reset ECU errors. The fact is that behind the habitually lit EGR error, you can not consider a more serious error. For example, an oxygen sensor error ...

At about the 14th year of the car’s operation, in such an implicit way, an error in the heating circuit of the fuel-air mixture sensor (air-fuel ratio, as it is called in Americans), which is located in front of the catalyst (somewhere immediately after the exhaust manifold), caught fire. If the errors of the second sensor, located in the area of ​​​​the cardan, practically do not affect the operation of the engine, then the ratio in the fuel-air mixture strongly depends on the readings of the first sensor. The symptoms are very characteristic: it gets dull at speeds up to 2-3 thousand revolutions, jerks at a traffic light in the drive position so that it becomes unpleasant, and does not stall at the same time. As for gasoline, I’m just silent - the records that were in winter and the usual snowdrifts were beaten ... The problem is obvious, and the error corresponds to it. But difficulties arose in order to unscrew the same sensor on the exhaust manifold without removing the casing, which had already worn out enough in 13 years. In general, at that moment I was inclined to think that these cars begin to "crumble" around this age ... Unlike the same shniva that my relatives bought in the fifth year of life ... Thank God, I was wrong. Well, okay ..., after the third service, which capitulated before unscrewing the sensor, I accidentally stumbled upon an exhaust system service, in which suddenly, just as accidentally, there was a home-made key from a curved pipe with a welded key at 22 ... Without unscrewing the sensor, which passed for the surprise of everyone without any problems, there was no point in ordering it: it is known that our cars are equipped with an additional sensor 89467-41021 according to Japanese catalogs and no other ... It turned out that in my case it was he. To see the number, I had to at least wipe the sensor with a brush ... A simple tester showed an open circuit between two black wires responsible for warming up the sensor, without which it cannot work. The corresponding original sensor was ordered for more than 4 thousand rubles in Emexe - not in vain, if only because the thread of the sensor is carefully lubricated with non-stick grease so that it does not turn sour after the same 13 years .. The sensor no longer bothered ...

Let's go back to the first months of operation after the purchase. As I have already said, excessive noise and whistling from under the hood did not allow me to drive quietly, and, after some time, on the recommendation of friends, I found a car service, in which an accurate diagnosis was made after listening to knocks under the timing cover. The diesel-like knocking definitely came from a loose pump impeller, and the whistle from the drive belts. The timing belt, which, according to the sticker, was at least 40,000 miles, looked fine, but was replaced with a new original along with GMB rollers. A pump was also supplied from the same GMB brand, which in terms of its characteristics and reliability is definitely not worse than the original one, given that the latter has to be changed every 5-7 years (it has been tested on more than one machine, there is such a weak spot in the first generation ravchik). The repair cost 11.5 thousand rubles, and after that it became clear that it was better to order spare parts yourself than sometimes overpay up to 100 percent for all sorts of little things ... The results of the repair, the main of which were the absence of extraneous noise in the engine and the agility (this is an all new timing belt) were more than satisfactory. Who would have thought then that it would take a long time to disentangle the consequences of this repair ...

It all started with the fact that the next day the car did not start ... The symptoms were exactly the same as with a dead battery. Since the previous owner, apparently, put an old battery before the sale, he should have been blamed. But doubts remained, so I jumped into the same car service, where they assured me that everything was fine, including charging the battery from a running generator. The story with the allegedly dead battery repeated a couple more times, after which it all ended with the battery light on the dashboard starting to blink. A careful examination showed that the power wire terminal on the generator was burned for one simple reason: the nut was not screwed ... As a result, the terminal and part of the wire insulation were badly burned. Before that, the loose nut was not visible under the plastic cap. Of course, the same master did not tighten the nut that removed the generator when replacing the timing belt and pump. It would be nice if that was the end of it...

Some time later, during the summer “tour” around the Volga region, suddenly, with a load on the engine (revs over 3000 and the air conditioner turned on), sharp, heartbreaking sounds from under the hood began to appear, which, as it turned out, were associated with a weakened generator belt. When trying to tighten the belt, it turned out that the bolt of the lower fastening of the generator bracket, which had been tightened in a car service, had come off. Of course, no one was going to drill the rest of the bolt from the cylinder block in the Volga region, so one of the local “specialists” found a logical solution to screw the bolt to the end of the bracket and insert its end into the corresponding hole above the rest of the broken bolt. Thus, it was possible to pull the generator on the bracket, and the problem seemed to be solved for a long time. I personally did not attach much importance then to small dried red spots that appeared in the following days over the main body of the pump with a thermostat ... After a month or two, a leak in the pump area became more obvious - already after periodic detection of drops of antifreeze under the engine in the morning. Since the leak was small and did not lead to a critical decrease in the coolant level, it was decided (as is customary) not to bother with trifles.

Coincidentally, next winter, through my own fault, a radiator also leaked in a 30-degree frost. The reason is banal - I slept through the replacement of the valve cover. Symptoms: flows only on an unheated car in a narrow range of engine temperatures (approximately 40-80 C), until the thermostat turns on and warms up the external circuit. Namely, while the radiator is cold, but the pressure has already appeared. A leak from under the gasket of the upper can, and also (which is the most disgusting) below the can in the corners on the left and right. The replacement of the cover with a pre-style one with a lower critical pressure (0.9 kPa instead of the original one by 1.1 kPa) helped to temporarily reduce the leak. In the summer, of course, it’s better not to ride with this one, since the liquid will boil (there is such a dependence of the boiling point on pressure). As it got warmer, the leak stopped bothering, but did not completely stop. It is useless to treat, even with Hi-Gear ... Unfortunately, I also tried it, but he could not help, but only thoroughly contaminated the cooling system.

As a result, it turned out that for a year and a half, not only my patience was lost drop by drop, but also the antifreeze itself. I failed to notice this, since the coolant level in the expansion tank at some point froze at a level somewhere above the minimum, which for some reason completely reassured me. When, suddenly, in the middle of the city traffic jam, the thermometer needle crept up, all that remained was to turn on the stove, open the windows and enjoy a really hot summer ... This behavior of the arrow was very unusual, since I had already managed to get used to the stability that the engine temperature always demonstrates on this car regardless of the season, 40-degree heat or 30-degree cold. Interestingly, it was worth starting the movement, a little gas, as the arrow returned to its proper place. From the second or third time, I noticed that when I stopped on an inclined surface, there was no overheating, and the fans turned on as expected. But as soon as you stupidly stand on level ground, the temperature immediately began to steadily creep up. Now I know that these are characteristic symptoms of an air lock in the cooling system, although in the same ill-fated service I was sentenced to replace the pump. It is clear that the plug in the upper part of the radiator not only prevents the circulation of liquid in the external circuit, but also breaks the connection with the expansion tank, which can no longer be used to judge the liquid level.

After I managed to quickly drive out the traffic jam (in a car service recommended by a friend of my wife), I traveled until the fall, when I managed to order an illiquid Nissens radiator for 4900 rubles. at a market value above 7000 p. Illiquid was that the radiator did not suit someone - he probably confused the machine with the mechanics. Armed with a new radiator and a strong desire to end the pump leak, I turned to a car service "from a friend", which offered for little money to combine the replacement of the radiator and the replacement of the pump gasket. For some reason, the removal of the pump cost only 1200 rubles, although in general it is associated with the removal of the timing cover. In the middle of the repair, a call came from the service about the fact that the guys managed to drill a piece of a bolt broken off in the cylinder block from under the wing. Joy was replaced by doubt and misunderstanding when I received a car in the evening with a bright buzzing sound from under the timing cover. The same guys confidently diagnosed. The broken bolt held not only the generator bracket, but also the pump. The bracket, then inserted into the corresponding hole, put pressure on the pump for a year and a half, causing it to wear improperly and that same antifreeze leak. After they drilled out a piece of the old bolt and put the pump in the correct position, this creepy sound came up. It only remained to believe and prepare for the replacement of the now pump (which has only covered a little more than 10 thousand miles!). Within a month, while I was ordering a pump and living in the hope of getting rid of the noise as soon as possible, the car service ceased to exist, and the pump began to flow again ...

Now, through other acquaintances, he turned to a brand new and clean car service, the owner of which, having taken a new GMB pump with gaskets in the kit, promised to fix the leak and check the noise source, which was supposed to be the timing rollers. Before I got back to work, I was gleefully informed that the noise was coming from the alternator bearings. Given that the generator has been turning for the 14th year, I had to agree to its bulkhead with the replacement of bearings. A day later, a complete repair of the pump was completed, which was flowing "from all sides." The leak was not only from the impeller side, but also from the thermostat side. As it turned out, the previous specialist simply put the impeller on the sealant. All this is good, but what was my disappointment when, picking up the car, I suddenly again found the same buzzing sound from under the timing cover - and this was with a new pump ... In response to my obvious question, various assumptions followed that the problem is in the timing rollers and even in the camshaft ... Like anything can be on an old car. It turned out that it was necessary to change everything again or look for the truth on the side, which I did. In the next service, I was finally given the correct diagnosis - they will tighten the timing belt! But, in order to fix the problem, they offered to come in a week, since the work involves the removal (again!) of the timing cover. In the end, I found a unique master in the area of ​​\u200b\u200bYabloneva Street, whose name is Alexander Vitalievich - according to all reviews, a real guru in his field. Coming to me to listen to the sound, he briefly returned to the hangar, came out with a key, dug somewhere over the timing cover, asked to start the engine and ... lo and behold! The terrible noise disappeared, as if it had never happened. It turns out that a special hole is provided in the timing cover just above the fastening of the timing belt tensioner pulley. Didn't the other three car services know about this!?

There were a couple more moments when troubles arose due to regular wear or untimely maintenance of individual components or assemblies.

Once, suddenly, a strong failure and "sneezing" began in the 2000-3000 rpm range. If at the same time you torture the car further, the check engine starts flashing due to misfires. I changed two sets of platinum candles, it did not help - enough for a couple of weeks - a month. It turned out that the whole point was the contamination of the heads of high-voltage wires. The accumulated dirt leads to breakdown over the spark plug insulator. If you look closely, you can see a narrow black track both on the insulator and inside the cable head. Checking the wires for resistance between the contacts, of course, did not give anything, just like checking the coil windings. To my misfortune, I thought of changing the candles in places, which burned the rest of the wires. The solution is to carefully clean the wire heads from the inside (I haven’t tried it, though), or simply replace them with new ones.

Once, at a gas station, he turned off the car, filled it with gasoline, sat down to start the engine, and then realized that the latter was not going to start, since the starter did not turn at all. A completely opposite situation, given the long queue for refueling and a complete misunderstanding of the source of the problem. When all my attempts to understand what was happening were unsuccessful, I decided to unlock the box and roll the car to the side. While fiddling with the box in an attempt to transfer it to the neutral position, I decided to start the engine again, which started up as if nothing had happened)) I did not attach any importance to my manipulations with the gear selector knob, but in vain! Unfortunately, after a similar situation happened a few more times, it dawned on me (taking into account what I read in the autodat book) that it was all about the knocked down adjustment of the engine start prohibition switch, which is located on the box and “allows” the engine to start only in positions P and N. I did not regulate it, but only further pushed the selector to the stop in the direction of P, if the starter did not want to turn on again. Probably, if you think about electronics and electrics, there is nothing more to talk about. And this is due, at least, to the quality of connectors and connections. The cleanliness and tightness of these same connectors is surprising even after 14 years of operation.

These are the jokes that happened to us and the car during the operation, which are more related to a combination of circumstances, the human factor, and most often - with my personal inexperience. I wanted to tell you more about them in order to warn possible new users from mistakes.

You can still list minor repairs, replacement of fluids, rubber, but they are not worth your attention. Let me just say that it takes about 30,000 rubles a year to pay for spare parts and work, and my friend spent the same amount when his similar car was only 7-8 years old.

Somehow I got carried away by describing problems and repairs ... Probably, I should have told more about other, “human” features of the ravchik. But for such a story, one review is not enough. I think those who chose this car know why they chose it.

For example, I never thought that it would be possible to come to the skating rink and sit quietly in the luggage compartment to put on the skates without thinking about getting dirty. The shape of the rear bumper and the tailgate, located above it, in new cars of this class will never allow this to be done ... As a result, "poor" owners have to change clothes in the cabin just like in cars.

Much has already been said about the off-road capabilities of the Rav 4-I. It is enough to watch the videos, where he confidently surpasses the eminent SUVs. I will not compare this conqueror of the urban jungle with real SUVs, although it was in urban conditions, especially during the next snow collapse, that I felt much more confident on this car than the owners of the same Niva, whose units, before moving off, spin and grind with all their wheels on snow-covered asphalt. And then, thanks to a quick-witted box, he pressed the slipper - and without axle box or skidding, you drive through the snow or sand the way you want, and not the way you can. Well, it’s just nice to feel like a person, driving into a yard uncleaned for many winter days or leaving it, without thinking before going to bed: “can I leave in the morning?”.

Starts ravchik in any weather, if you fill in the correct oil. In our climate, the mineral Toyota 5w30 SL was enough for me, which can be safely used in the temperature range from -35 to +35 C (it is also recommended by the manufacturer). The original oil was always poured into this car, and the result was obvious (I myself observed a pure red color without any deposits under the valve cover when I changed the gasket).

It is noteworthy that the vast majority of owners of such cars, whom I constantly meet on our roads, are relatively independent people aged 30-40 years. Apparently, it is no coincidence that the age of owning such a car most often coincides with an important stage in the development of a driver, which gives the necessary freedom and independence (from the weather, terrain and other external factors), but at the same time teaches a responsible attitude to the operation and maintenance of equipment. Personally, for almost three years of operation, I reached such a state with the main character of the recall that I felt him as my body part. And everything would have gone on as usual, if on one gloomy autumn evening a VAZ dvenashka had not flown into me from behind at a decent speed ... A blow, something like a jump, and I stick out with my foot, which suddenly turned out to be on the gas pedal, in front of Ford Focus. 25 damages according to the results of an independent examination, the insurance culprit is Rosgosstrakh, a long trial ... Look what is left of the dvenashka.

Surprisingly, after all this horror, the car is on the move, the turn signal that flashed incorrectly suddenly recovers itself in a day, the torn plastic body kits and the exhaust system unexpectedly easily fall into their original places (the torn muffler, however, had to be changed), and from the external parts it is subject to repair and painting just the back door. It’s even a pity that due to the next replenishment in the family there is no way to give the car for a month for repairs. A work colleague buys it at half price for his wife, who picks up the car just tomorrow after restoration. I am sure that there is a new life and a new story ahead for our hero...

After the resurrection

Finally crossed paths with the new owner. See photo. Repairs were made in the village for 15,000 (instead of 150,000 according to a preliminary estimate in the city !!!). Didn't get a single spare part ordered. Nothing was pulled out, although it cost both front and rear. They made only the back door (moreover, in order not to take out the glass and rubber bands, the door was simply cut, straightened and welded again) and the floor under it. Plastic is everywhere in holes and tears, but it's plastic, and the iron on it is eternal. Cool, of course, but you can’t sell it for 300 thousand, a maximum of 200. In any case, a new and long life for our typewriter!
